When Is Flushing Required?
Flushing is required any time the compressor has failed with internal damage. Here is how to tell:
- Black or dark oil coming from the compressor fittings when disconnected
- Metal flakes or shavings visible in the oil or on the suction screen
- Compressor seized and will not turn by hand
- Loud knocking or grinding was present before the compressor stopped working

What You Need for an AC System Flush
Flush Solvents
Use a dedicated AC flush solvent. The most common and widely recommended options include:
- Nu-Calgon Rx-11 Flush — industry standard, evaporates cleanly, safe for all AC components
- ZeroFlush — non-toxic, non-flammable alternative
- 4312 A/C Flush — widely available at auto parts stores

The AC System Flush Process: Step by Step
Step 1: Recover the Refrigerant

Step 2: Remove the Old Compressor
Disconnect and remove the failed compressor. Inspect the discharge and suction ports. If you see metal debris, black sludge, or burnt-smelling oil, a full system flush is confirmed as necessary.
Step 3: Remove the Orifice Tube or Expansion Valve
This component must come out before flushing. It acts as a restriction point and will trap debris if left in place. In most cases, you should plan to replace it with a new one. Inspect the old one closely. If the screen is packed with metal shavings, that confirms severe contamination.
Step 4: Remove the Receiver Drier or Accumulator
This component also must be removed before flushing and replaced with a new one. It contains desiccant that absorbs moisture, and once it is saturated, it cannot be reused.
Step 5: Flush the Condenser
Disconnect the condenser from the AC lines. Using the flush gun, inject flush solvent into one port while holding the catch container under the other. Apply shop air in short bursts to push the solvent through. Repeat until the solvent comes out clean and clear.
Some condensers, particularly parallel-flow designs with very small internal passages, cannot be effectively flushed. If your vehicle has a parallel-flow condenser and the compressor failed catastrophically, replacing the condenser may be the safer option.
Step 6: Flush the Evaporator
This is the trickiest component to flush because it is buried inside the dashboard. Disconnect the evaporator inlet and outlet lines from the engine bay side. Flush through the lines in both directions until clean solvent flows out.
If the evaporator has extremely small passages or shows heavy contamination, replacement may be necessary. In practice, most evaporators can be flushed successfully.
Step 7: Flush All AC Lines
Flush each hard line and hose individually. Pay special attention to any lines with sharp bends or internal mufflers, as debris accumulates in these spots.
Step 8: Blow Out All Components with Dry Nitrogen or Shop Air
After flushing, blow dry compressed air or nitrogen through every component and line to remove residual flush solvent. The solvent must be completely evaporated before reassembly. Any remaining solvent will contaminate the new oil charge.
Step 9: Reassemble with New Components
Install the new receiver drier, new expansion valve or orifice tube, and new O-rings on every connection. Then install the new compressor.
Step 10: Evacuate and Recharge
Pull a deep vacuum for at least 30 to 45 minutes to remove all moisture. If the vacuum holds, charge the system with the correct type and amount of refrigerant.
How to Tell If the Flush Was Successful
A successful flush produces these results:
- Flush solvent runs clear with no discoloration on the final pass
- No visible metal particles or black residue in the catch container on the final pass
- All components blow dry with no oily residue

Flushing Mistakes That Kill New Compressors
Not flushing at all. This is the most common mistake. Many DIYers and even some shops skip the flush to save time and install a new compressor directly into a contaminated system.
Using the wrong solvent. Brake cleaner and other industrial solvents leave residue that attacks rubber seals and contaminates PAG oil.
Not replacing the drier and expansion valve. These components trap debris and moisture. Reusing them defeats the purpose of flushing.
Rushing the drying process. Residual flush solvent in the system dilutes the compressor oil and reduces lubrication. Every component must be completely dry before reassembly.
Flushing through the compressor. Never flush through the new or old compressor. The compressor has internal valves and oil passages that trap flush solvent.
Can You Flush Without Professional Equipment?
Yes, but with caveats. You need at minimum a flush gun, a can of proper AC flush solvent, and an air compressor. You also need a vacuum pump and manifold gauge set for the evacuation and recharge steps.
If you do not have access to a refrigerant recovery machine, you will need a shop to recover the old refrigerant before you begin and possibly to handle the final charge as well.
