About Freightliner

At the start of the 21st century, Freightliner made a number of revisions to their subsidiaries. In addition to acquiring Western Star Trucks, the company focused on consolidating its manufacture for American LaFrance products and wanted to integrate the production of emergency vehicles into a single firm which could operate at higher volume. However, American LaFrance would be sold to a private equity group by 2005 while DaimlerChrysler would maintain its Ladson factory ownership.

In 2006 the Freightliner Sprinter was revised. Although still sold primarily as a parcel carrying van, the company made the decision to give it increased passenger capacity, which made in comparable to competing vans which were being sold at the time. DaimlerChrysler would split in 2007 and the Freightliner Company would be reorganized, shifting some of its production to Mexico.

About Freightliner Sprinter 3500

The Freightliner Sprinter 3500 is larger than the 2500 and designed to carry up to five passengers for those that purchase the crew cab configuration. It is equipped with a turbo diesel, four cylinder engine that is 2 liter and capable of generating 161 horsepower with 3800 RPM. It has an RWD (rear wheel drive) style drivetrain and when sufficiently equipped it can tow a maximum of 7500 pounds, though the majority of models tow around 5000 pounds. This allows it to haul a considerable amount of cargo and is one of the reasons why it is routinely used for the delivery of parcels.

Common Freightliner Sprinter 3500 A/C Problems

A common issue which is encountered in the Freightliner Sprinter 3500 is a front seal compressor leak. This can lead to the air conditioner having problems, and if this occurs you’ll want to check behind its pulley to see if there is a buildup of dirt. However, leaks are tricky and can appear almost anywhere. Some of the older Freightliner models used condensers which were poorly designed and prone to leakage, so the driver or mechanic will want to inspect the lines to determine if oil is present on them. Depending on the length of time that has passed since the system was last maintained, fixing the leak might not be worth it, and it is better to completely replace the A/C system.
